Save. I have seen a drastic decline in the acceptance of 500 - 200 and even 100 euro notes in Europe when I came here this time. 50€ notes are the most common Euro Banknote according to wikipedia in fact 48.6% of all Euro notes are 50€ notes. 100€ notes are a bit more uncommon, you also can't get them from ATMs. 200€ and 500€ notes are rare but when you do see them it's usually several at once. 97. meshugga.

In Germany shops are allowed to not accept large banknotes (200 and 500€) though as long as they clearly indicate this and the bill isn't appropriate to the bill (i.e. paying a 450€ bill with a 500€ note is fine, but paying for 60€ isn't), although that's a somewhat legal grey zone.

Hi-Unfortunately I have been saddled with a 500 Euro note. As I knew it was legal tender I did not realise it would be difficult to exchange- either into sterling or Euro notes of smaller divisions. My Bank will not exchange, neither will my travel agent. Does anyone know a UK Bank that will? However, these notes will continue to be legal tender in the euro area.
